Monsters lands on best of 2023 lists!
I’m thrilled and honored that Monsters has landed on so many end of year lists, including the New York Times Notable Books list, which has long been a dream. It was named a best book of the year by the Washington Post, the New Yorker, NPR, Elle, Esquire, Kirkus, Chicago Tribune, Fresh Air, Electric Lit, Apple Books, Audible, the Sunday Times (London), Vulture, Oprah Daily, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, and Publishers Weekly. It was also listed as one of the 10 best reviewed nonfiction books of the year by Lit Hub, and Publisher’s Lunch found in a tally that it was one of the “best of the best” of the year, based on “over 50 ‘votes’ from a variety of highly selective lists from critics and reviewers, award nominees, bookseller and librarian picks, book club selections and more.”
I really didn’t know how this book would be received—would readers be open to a couple hundred pages of thinking and feeling my way through this problem? Would I be summarily canceled (not a real thing, incidentally)? It’s incredibly gratifying that the book has been read in good faith. Ending the year in gratitude.
